Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature or information – the activity of making information available for public view. In some cases authors may be their own publishers, meaning: originators and developers of content also provide media to deliver and display the content.

Traditionally, the term refers to the distribution of printed works such as books (the "book trade") and newspapers. With the advent of digital information systems and the Internet, the scope of publishing has expanded to include electronic resources, such as the electronic versions of books and periodicals, as well as micropublishing, websites, blogs, video games and the like.

Publishing includes: the stages of the development, acquisition, copyediting, graphic design, production – printing (and its electronic equivalents), and marketing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, books, literary works, musical works, software and other works dealing with information, including the electronic media.

Publication is also important as a legal concept: (1) as the process of giving formal notice to the world of a significant intention, for example, to marry or enter bankruptcy; (2) as the essential precondition of being able to claim defamation; that is, the alleged libel must have been published, and (3) for copyright purposes, where there is a difference in the protection of published and unpublished works.

How profitable is a career in the publishing industry?
Q. I'm looking at musical theatre or a career in publishing (preferably editorial or in production), but I'm not sure which will be more stable. I was also wondering if there are actually jobs outside of New York to be had in publishing. Thanks in advance.

How can I find some work experience in publishing?
Q. Hi guys, I could really do with some surefire ways to get some work experience in publishing and journalism which is the field I want to go into after I graduate. I've sent emails and letters out to loads of magazine and newspaper publishing houses but most I haven't even heard back from, I know it's competitive at the moment especially within this industry but I'm only looking for work experience and my CV is decent enough!! Any suggestions?

A. Simple question: do you have a blog? If not, why not? Blogs are great - and free - evidence of your capability and experience. You can start one tomorrow and have 100 entries in less than 30days. You can display your ability to pick, research, and write-up a suitable story. If you want to get work experience in a newspaper, make it local stories; a magazine, features (on something ideally to do with their topic/market); or a mix of both! Employers look for both potential and evidence with young job seekers. Show them the evidence, and you become far, far more employable. For free credible blogs look at blogger.com and Wordpress.com. Good Luck!

How can I start my own publishing company?
Q. I am looking to start my own publishing company. I don't want to use a self-publisher such as Xulon, as I want to start my own; books, cd's, and dvd's. No ebooks at all!

A. My answer is based on many years experience as an entrepreneur. Years ago, I had an idea for a book, and was turned down by 17 publishers. I self-published the book, did VERY well with it, and that launched my career in publishing. So, this advice comes from someone who had been there. First of all, remember this: You can't be all things to all people. While your goal of publishing books, CD's and DVD's is admirable, as a start-up, you need to focus on one of those. If you try to do all three to start, you very likely won't succeed at any of them. So, here are the steps I would recommend you follow: 1. Choose your focus. 2. Pick something for your first project, whether it's a book, CD or DVD. (Make sure you have the legal right… [cont.]
